Founded in 1831 in Providence, RI, by Jabez Gorham and Henry L. Webster, Gorham Manufacturing Company grew over the succeeding years to become one of the most important producers of silver flatware in the United States. Cited by both the French and English press for it’s innovative designs and high quality, Gorham was frequently commissioned to make commemorative pieces, such as fabulous Century Vase, made of over 2,000 ounces of sterling silver, and a loving cup made for Admiral George Dewey of 70,000 dimes contributed by sailors and school children in honor of his spectacular victory over the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Manila Bay.
During the latter decades of the 19th Century, Gorham Manufacturing was at the forefront of the Aesthetic Movement, an American design trend closely associated with the Art Nouveau. Under its influence, Gorham produced silver objects of incredible beauty which are actively sought by collectors today.
